Board of Public Works & Safety

Each city must have a Board of Works and Safety as established by Indiana Code (IC 36-4-9-7). The Board of Public Works and Safety consists of three members, one being the mayor. The remaining two members are appointed by the mayor and must be residents of the city and may hold other appointments or hold elected offices.

The public safety function of the board includes law enforcement and fire protection. The public works function of the board includes control over streets, sanitation, transportation, sewers and city utilities.

The Board of Public Works and Safety meet on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 8:00 am  in the council room of the Berne City Building, 158 West Franklin Street.   The meetings are open to the public.
